Health Career: Surgical Technologist

Who are surgical technologists and what do they do?

Surgical technologists, also called operating room (O.R.) technicians, prepare patients and the O.R. for surgery and maintain a clean, safe environment throughout all surgeries. They help during surgery by handing surgical instruments to the surgeon and providing general assistance to all members of the operating team.

How do surgical technologists typically spend their workday?

As a surgical technologist, you will likely work in a hospital operating room or within a specific department of a hospital. You may assist in performing one to several surgeries a day. For example, if you are the surgical technologist for an open heart surgery, you will need to prepare the appropriate room, medical supplies and equipment for the surgery by sterilizing the equipment and organizing the surgical instruments. You will also transport the patient to the operating room and prepare him or her for surgery by shaving and disinfecting the area that requires treatment. Then, throughout the surgery, you will help the surgeon and operating team obtain and keep track of the equipment they need.

What does it take to be a good surgical technologist?

If you want to help save lives and work as an important part of a medical team, surgical technology could be the field for you. As a surgical technologist, you should be calm, organized, rational and compassionate. You should also be interested in science and medicine. You must also be able to stand and remain alert for long periods of time.

What are some health-related jobs that are similar to that of a surgical technologist?

Physician assistant, respiratory therapist, registered nurse.
