Health Career: Dietitian

Who are dietitians and what do they do?

Dietitians work in food science and human nutrition. They help people learn about and follow healthy eating habits. They often create personalized diets for patients according to the person's health status and nutritional needs. They may also oversee a hospital or health clinic's food preparation service.

Dietitians are often referred to as "nutritionists," but dietitians must complete more education and training than nutritionists, who often complete only a few months of schooling or training after high school. As a result, dietitians shoulder more responsibility in their jobs and earn higher salaries than nutritionists.

How do dietitians typically spend their workday?

As a dietitian, you will generally work in a health clinic, school, public health agency or a business. You may help to prepare and inspect food, or you may work with patients to help them improve or personalize a healthy eating plan.

What does it take to be a good dietitian?

If you want to help others eat and learn about healthful foods, being a dietitian may be the job for you. You should be a good communicator and enjoy teaching others.

What are some health-related jobs that are similar to that of a dietitian?

Health educator, registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, medical social worker.
