Palo Alto , CA – July 23, 2004 – The Stanford Medical Youth Program opened its doors today at Stanford University’s Roth House to 24 students from northern and central California.

These select students are admitted from a pool of about 300 applicants from low-income and educationally under-served schools. While on campus, SMYSP students will attend science and medical seminars, labs and lectures, as well as learn time management and study skills. This intensive program is meant to take students who show aptitude and interest in pursuing science and healthcare-related careers and give them the one-on-one counseling and tutoring needed to help them succeed.

SMYSP has been welcoming students to campus for 17 years, and the summer program’s statistics tell an amazing story. Since its inception, more than 357 students have graduated from the summer program, and 95 percent of them have been admitted to colleges or universities. Among those students who’ve graduated from college, 11 percent are attending or have completed medical school. And 21 percent are working professionals in health-related careers.

But the mentoring and college advisement of SMYSP students does not end after the summer program closes.

“We continue to check-in with our students long after they have graduated from the summer program,” Judith Ned, SMYSP Executive Director said. “We give them advice about which classes to take, we write them letters of recommendation and we give them pep talks when they get discouraged.”

SMYSP alum Xavier Livermon agrees. Today, he is a graduate student at UC Berkeley, but he still gets phone calls from the SMYSP staff.

“The fact that the program always checks on you is important as well,” he says, “because I know I am being watched by people who care about me and want me to be successful. It’s been over 10 years, but I am still connected to the program.”

The SMYSP Summer Program runs from June 20 through July 25, and is open to interested members of the press. In addition, Executive Director Judith Ned and Co-Founder Dr. Marilyn Winkleby are available for interviews.
