Palo Alto, CA – The Stanford Medical Youth Science Program unveils the Minority K-12 Initiative for Teachers and Students (MKITS) Program that will bring in-depth science-based curriculum to four partner high schools in northern and central California that serve predominantly African-American, Native American and Latino students.

Partner California high schools include: Round Valley High School in Covelo; Edison High School in Stockton; William C. Overfelt High School in San Jose; Oakland Technical High School in Oakland.

Students in the MKITS Program will study cardiovascular disease in each of their communities through the use of scientific data collection and research processes, workshops and labs. MKITS students will produce scientific presentations of their work. The MKITS Program hopes to reach 97 students in its first year.

Ultimately, the goal of MKITS is to broaden the knowledge base and confidence of minority and low-income students in the field of science by showing them how science affects them and their communities. By involving students in the identification and solutions of health problems in their neighborhoods, SMYSP hopes to show how the study of science is truly relevant to their lives.
