SMYSP Stanford Medical Youth Science Program

Discovering Medicine @ Stanford

Due to demand, applications for 2016 Discovering Medicine @ Stanford were made available through March 31 only. Students will be admitted on a rolling basis until the program is filled.

The three-day Discovering Medicine @ Stanford program is interactive, with small group workshops, and direct interactions with a variety of health professionals from Stanford Health Care and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System hospitals, as well as faculty, staff, and students from the Stanford School of Medicine.

The program is held mid-week in early August. (Program dates for 2016 are August 10-12.) Applications for the 3-day Discovering Medicine @ Stanford become available in the Spring of each year. Admission for qualified applicants, as well as a wait-list, is competitive and rolling; it is to the applicants' advantage to apply early. (Applications will remain open for a minimum of one week, but may close at any time if space in the program is no longer available.) See below for information regarding our self-subscribe application announce list.

Eligibility

   Group Concensus

Please note that housing is not provided. Students from outside the Bay Area must stay in local housing with their parents, guardians, or another responsible adult designated by their parents. A list of local accommodations is available here: http://www.stanford.edu/dept/visitorinfo/plan/lodging.html. It is our expectation that all registered students who are from out of the area will be under the supervision of a responsible adult when the Discovering Medicine program is not in session.

Application Details

Deadline for applications is announced when applications become available. Rolling admission will apply until the program is filled. If there is insufficient enrollment, the Discovering Medicine @ Stanford program will not be offered.

A complete application packet will include an online application and a short essay question. Discovering Medicine @ Stanford is most appropriate for current sophomore and junior high school applicants. Seniors transitioning into college are strongly discouraged from applying because some of the material that may be presented (such as college preparation discussions) may be inopportune and elementary. As well, freshmen may not be academically prepared. Consequently, only current sophomore and junior applicants are eligible to apply.

Additionally, applicants may be required to submit a current grade report or transcript upon request (only). Details will be provided at the time of any request.

Cost

The program cost is $850. Scholarships are not available.
